April Race Meeting Wrap Up May 28, 2019
It was clear skies for the April WA F1000 championship round with a few familiar faces returning to the grid. Kyle Gurton was back in an F1000 after his run in Victorian Formula Ford, as well as Chris Ratty in a Radical after a year away. Luke Iustini and Daniel Gonzalez were also making their debut in the category in Radicals, both competing in their first ever race events!
Eyes were on qualifying to see if any drivers could go closer to the lap record than in March with the track having time to wear in. Unfortunately hot conditions saw the fastest time of 53.9s set by Jordan Oon. Closely followed by Adam Lisle, BD Soutar-Dawson and Kyle Gurton. Aaron Love again impressed putting a Radical in the top 5, with Mitch Johnson and Mike Folwell close behind. The trio of new Radicals were only separated by 1 second, with Chris coming out on top, followed by Luke and Daniel. Stuart Kostera was forced to start from the back of the field after a gear system failure.
Race 1 saw a fast start from Jordan, getting the jump early on the field. BD took a few laps to pass Adam but then had enough pace to chase down the leader. He didn’t have quote enough time however, with Jordan holding on for the race win, followed by BD, Adam and Stuart who charged through the field. Kyle finished in 5th position, with Aaron and Mitch having a battle throughout the race. The trio of Radicals were nose to tail all race, with all the cars being separated by 1 tenth of a second in lap time by the chequered flag!
Race 2 was much the same with Jordan taking the lead into turn 1. This time BD was able to draft past into turn 7 and pull a gap on the field from there. Behind Stuart, Adam and Jordan had an exciting battle for the remainder of the race, with the trio finishing in those positions. Kyle upped his pace considerably from race 1, hanging onto the back of the front pack and Aaron and Mitch again were locked in battle. Chris, Luke and Daniel again finished in these positions nose to tail.
The start of race 3 was marred by a crash between Stuart and Adam approaching turn 2. Adam was forced off into the infield with damage to the floor and rear wing, while Stuart speared back across the track making contact with the wall. Thankfully all drivers were ok apart for a few bumps and bruises, and cars can always be put back together! The safety car restart following the red flag caused by the accident saw BD take the lead with Jordan following. Kyle was able to hold onto 3rd position, with the rest of the field following in line. Chris and Luke swapped places many times throughout the race, with Luke being able to hold on by just 1 second to finish at the front of the 3 Radicals.
The next race is on the 23rd of June where the Stewart Sisters will be making their return to the category after Madeline’s absence due to Super 3 commitments. It will be a full field and some great racing!
